Bryde's whale (Cetartiodactyla: Balaenopteridae) occurrence and movements in coastal areas of southeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Lodi,Liliane; Tardin,Rodrigo H.; Hetzel,Bia; Maciel,Israel S.; Figueiredo,Luciana D.; Simão,Sheila M..
Bryde's whales, Balaenoptera edeni Anderson, 1879, were observed on 17 occasions (N = 21 surveys) in the coastal waters off Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil during austral summer through autumn 2014. Five whales were individually identified using photo-identification techniques. The mean interval between resightings for all individuals was 12.8 days, with a minimum of one day and a maximum of 48 days. The comparison between the catalogs of Bryde's whales off Rio de Janeiro and the Cabo Frio region revealed matches for three individuals. The resightings show movements of up to 149.6 km along the coastal waters off the state of Rio de Janeiro. Most of the observations consisted of solitary individuals (82.3% of sightings). Feeding was the predominant...

Diversity of microsatellites linked to the FSHbeta gene, their usefulness for individual identification and association with reproductive performance Ciência Rural
Duarte,Letícia Becker Homrich; Moraes,José Carlos Ferrugem; Weimer,Tania de Azevedo.
The genetic diversity of three microsatellites (ILSTS027, MBO22, BM4325) mapped on the bovine chromosome 15 and linked to the follicle-stimulating hormone beta gene (FSHß) was investigated in cows of a Brangus Ibagé herd and the efficiency of these markers for individual identification and parentage control was estimated. Possible associations between each molecular marker and cow reproductive performance were also analyzed. Six alleles were detected in BM4325 and ILSTS027 and 12 in MB022, the most frequent being BM4325*101, BM4325*103, ILSTS027*169 and MB022*229. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.58 to 0.88 while expected heterozygosity ranged from 65% to 89%, with an average mean value of 77%. Although only three markers were studied, the...

Evaluation of a European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) post-larval tagging method with ultra-small RFID tags ArchiMer
Faggion, Sara; Sanchez, Pierre; Vandeputte, Marc; Clota, Frederic; Vergnet, Alain; Blanc, Marie-odile; Allal, Francois.
Individual tagging is key to a better understanding of early life stages in fish. Very small RFID transponder microchips (500 × 500 × 100 μm, 82 μg) are now available. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol to tag European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) larvae from 61 days post-hatching (dph; standard length ~10 mm) to 96 dph (standard length ~28 mm) through intra-coelomic implantation of microchips. The suitability of such a tagging procedure was evaluated, with the purpose of determining the minimal fish age and body size for microchip tagging without adverse effects on survival and growth performance. We produced an experimental population composed by 50:50 normally pigmented larvae and albino larvae through artificial fertilization. Five...

Implementation of a Molecular System for Traceability of Beef Based on Microsatellite Markers Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Felmer D,Ricardo; Sagredo D,Boris; Chávez R,Renato; Iraira H,Sergio; Folch M,Carolina; Parra G,Lorena; Catrileo S,Adrián; Ortiz L,Manuel.
Animal products traceability has acquired considerable importance as a security measure in EEC member countries since the food crisis of the mid-nineties. This has led to reinforcing the capacity to manage cattle product quality, with traceability emerging as the main tool to prevent risks to product security and quality as demanded by consumers in developed countries. The practical application of a traceability system for beef, based on molecular markers requires the election of a panel of microsatellites, as well as the optimization of methods of sampling and DNA analysis. In this work, a traceability system for beef based on a panel of 10 microsatellites markers was implemented. Different biological samples were evaluated, such as hair, blood, tissue...

Individual growth monitoring of European sea bass larvae by image analysis and microsatellite genotyping ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Vandeputte, Marc; Pepey, Elodie; Vidal, Marie-odile; Chatain, Beatrice.
The aims of the present study were to develop non-lethal methods to identify individual fish larvae and post-larvae before tagging and accurately follow their growth characteristics. European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) was used as a model species at four different ages ranging from 71 to 100 days post fertilization (dpf). Two different methods were tested for non-lethal tissue sampling from each larva for DNA analysis: 1) using a sterile absorbent paper to sample mucus and/or epithelial cells by rubbing the fish skin and 2) fin-clip of the bottom part of the caudal fin. Whatever the age of the larvae, the genotyping rate (at 12 microsatellite markers) was low with the use of sterile absorbent paper but relatively high with fin-clip sampling at 80 and...

Photo-identification as a technique for recognition of individual fish: a test with the freshwater armored catfish Rineloricaria aequalicuspis Reis & Cardoso, 2001 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Dala-Corte,Renato B.; Moschetta,Júlia B.; Becker,Fernando G..
Abstract Photo-identification allows individual recognition of animal species based on natural marks, being an alternative to other more stressful artificial tagging/marking techniques. An increasing number of studies with different animal groups has shown that photo-identification can successfully be used in several situations, but its feasibility to study freshwater fishes is yet to be explored. We demonstrate the potential use of photo-identification for intraspecific recognition of individuals in the stream-dwelling loricariid Rineloricaria aequalicuspis . We tested photo-identification in laboratory and field conditions based on the interindividual variability in abdominal bony plates. Our test yielded high correct matches in both laboratory (100%)...
